It has been only been six months since I bought my first Pendulum Wall Clock and I have to say I can’t imagine not have it in my home. I did some research on-line and found the perfect one for me, it is a Brookwood by Kassel Wall Clock. It is made from beautifully crafted wood with a glass front the encloses the pendulum. My clock chimes every hour and once on the half hour. The chimes might be my favorite part about Pendulum Wall Clocks, but it is hard to say since I also love the conversation they attract when I have over family and friends. The most common questions I get about my pendulum clock is, how old is it and who gave it to me. I think most people assume since it looks antique that it must be a family heirloom or that I paid some outrageous price from an antique dealer. I think you do have to look at the purchase of a pendulum clock as more than just another clock hanging on the wall. It is truly an investment. An investment that will gain value over time, but I would never part with mine. A pendulum clock when taken care of will be around for many years to come. They are a work of art and need to be treated as such. I like the idea that I have invested in something that will become a family heirloom.
During my research into pendulum wall clocks I found out there where many different styles of clocks to chose from. Designer clocks that come in round, square, glass, wood, and even stainless steel. Novelty clocks with as many themes as you can think of, here are just a list of a few I found: A Betty Boop clock, Harley Davidson clocks, clocks with a cat body and the tail as the pendulum, clocks with bird, baby clocks, and don’t forget motorcycle gas tank clocks. This is just a short list I would be writing for awhile to list them all. Contemporary wall clocks with all different patterns to chose from, but once again with most of these….they were all just plain old round. Now if you want big, you can go with oversized clocks. If your looking for something big to hang on your wall then this type of clock is right for you. I know this is going to sound like a repeat phrase, but I wasn’t looking for a round clock like everyone else. The next type I looked at was Antique Grandfather Clocks, or at least antique looking not antique priced. I have to say that I found a couple that I did fall in love with and have added to my wish list, but at this time they were just to big for my current situation. Antique Mantle Clocks were also on my list, but of coarse you need to have a mantle.
So after all my looking into Pendulum Wall Clocks I have to say that I am very happy with the choice I made. Pendulum clocks have been around since 1656 when a Dutch scientist, Christian Huygens finish his invention and a year later put a patent on his discovery. Pendulum Wall Clocks have had quiet a journey over the years and have remained towards the top when it comes to keeping time. As far as looks, I would put them at the top.
Now I would like to point out a couple other things that I have learned when it comes to Pendulum Wall Clocks. First of all they must be hung level for the pendulum to swing equally. If they are not you will notice the tick-tock tick-tock will have an irregular sound like tick-tock…..tick-tock. It is hard to explain in words, but you will be able to hear the pause. So when installing always have a level handy.
Another point is that when setting your pendulum wall clocks all you need to move is the minute hand. Just move the minute hand around until the top of the hour and then let it cycle completely through the chimes. Then continue to move the minute hand until you reach the desired time stopping for the chimes each time you reach the hour, or in a lot of pendulum wall clocks, also stopping on the half hour for the chimes. Never try and rush the process by attempting to move the hour hand, this will damage your pendulum wall clock.
